Tamil Refugees Forced Into Prostitution

July 02, 2009 10:30:00
In a special column by the renowned magazine 'The Australian' in Melbourne, the reporters state Tamil refugee women in internment camps are subjected to sex rackets by the army.

The camps located at Vanni and other areas accommodate more than 300, 000 people within the barbed wires offering the worst living conditions for the refugees. More than 3 families are crammed into the miniscule space provided that gives them no privacy and facility. The soldiers approach them to offer facility and better food but expect the women to pay them back. Some of the refugees are willing so as to survive the hardships in the camp yet a majority of the people are against the practice.

Suspected LTTE men and women had been isolated from the civilians but their whereabouts are unknown. International Human Rights Commission condemns the army for abducting family members without informing their parents properly which is considered a violation of rights. External affairs minister of Sri Lanka denies such allegations and said, if the army wanted they could have raped every women on their way as they were victorious in all regions.

Latest reports say the condition of camps are improving with more adequate basic facilities but the world countries should urge Sri Lanka and send the 300, 000 Tamils back to their homes without confining them within the internment camps.
