After much later since its arrival, the central government had budged to allow the supply ship 'Vanangaman' to dock at Chennai port to unload the contents which will be transported for the interment camps at Sri Lanka within a week's time.
Led by Captain Ali carrying 14 member crew and a few passengers, the ship embarked from Europe carrying 884 tones of supplies including medicines, clothing, preserved foods and supply for the displaced Tamils at refugee camps. The Sri Lankan government inspected the ship at Colombo and certified it to be harmless. But, later they suspected to be sent by LTTE and sent it to India. The ship was in the Indian coastal region near Chennai port which was again sent to the International seas by the Indian Navy.
After the envoys of Sri Lanka presidential advisor Basil Raja Pakse, president's secretary Lalith Weeratunga and defence secretary Gothabaya Raja Pakse met the external affairs minister S M Krishna, an amicable treaty was formed and they agreed to receive the contents of the ship. Chief Minister Karunanidhi earlier urged the central government to allow the ship and also sent educational minister Ponmudy on his behalf.
The ship has now reached Chennai port and the commodities unloaded supervised by the customs authority will be distributed to Tamil refugees by the Red Cross committee.
