Vettaikaran - Same Old Wine
Dec 17,2009
Ilayathalapathy Vijay's 'Vettaikaran' is a no-think-hard entertainer with stereotype scenes and very well accustomed commercialism for the audience.
Statutory warning: We are not responsible if the review appears too clichéd or copied from some other critic's view for all credits goes to the makers for repetitively rehashing the familiar scenes.
Amidst the usual hype that shrouds Vijay movie, 'Vettaikaran' distributed by Sun Pictures is a pure commercial movie with the expected twists(!) and turns that creates the 'saviour of masses' within a short period. When justice fails to do its duty, comes an young aspiring police man from the village to restore peace and order in the polluted city. Really, not just us but everyone says give us a break, for god's sake'. Within few minutes, the story from the age of knights bore the viewers but it just moves forward with the songs and fights.
'Police' Ravi (Vijay) in the lines of his mentor comes to the city and joins the same college with a dream to wear the Khaki uniform one day. Before that, he also falls in love with Suseela (Anushka) and when he's on his way the atrocities in the city shock him. The first wave of goondas is led by Chella and Ravi walks in to thrash him. Very soon he goes to the hospital only to be backed up by his powerful mentor Vedha Nayagam, (the villain of 'Vettri Vizha' fame). The endless series of punch dialogues with challenges follows only to take a break with songs here and there. Everything ends well in the end.
It's such a pity but the fact that there is nothing to write home about the cast of the movie. Everyone just sleep walks through the role as if they have nothing much to do. The lead star Vijay is in his forte with gibberish talks, punches and the thoughtful look when everyone indirectly 'calls' him to politics. The heroine with the potential to play the cult demeanor in 'Arundhathi' had been utterly wasted without any scope to perform. Anushka is the glam tool with minimal clothes in all the songs and goes missing in the second half! Villains are loud and police are silly owing to the Kollywood formula!
Director Babu Sivan made his debut with such a noteworthy star but as a filmmaker he has a long way to go. Because his first movie got succumbed into the star power and we are yet to know what Babu is capable of.
Musical score by Vijay Antony is a welcome asset of the movie. Right from his dashing opening number 'Naa Adicha' to the melody 'Oru Chinna Thamari', he simply rocks. Cinematography is pleasant while editing is the regular cuts to build the image.
Again the same, it's high time the star changes tracks. Every scene is predictable and it's so hard to enjoy the experience of watching it yet again. If the directors still think a young guy smashing 50 goons, letting the police on a goose chase and breaking the villain empire single handedly, then they are living in a different world. When young newcomers could rock the cinema, an actor with potential like Vijay could do better!
Vijay's 'Vettaikaran' is nothing new and repeats all the love, fight and challenges we have seen enough of in the past.
Verdict: Just the same old saga continues
