Unnai Pol Oruvan - High Class Message
Sep 16,2009
UTV and RajKamal Films 'Unnai Pol Oruvan' carries a slashing message in the vantage point of a common man in the least entertaining manner but with a thought provoking approach.
When the government and the leaders think an ordinary person as the number of votes while counting their death in bomb blasts as tolls, what should he do to grab their attention? If terrorism is what gives a wakeup call for the lot why not use it for good?
Straight from the stable of Hollywood, director Chakri Toleti has varnished the movie with high tech visual effects right from the title card and the jimmy jip camera just swings across the tall buildings in the city swinging us into the action. To make a film that runs 1 hour and 45 minutes in Tamil, it needs guts to deliver the story and not get diverted. Chakri with the harbinger Kamal Haasan has pulled it off elegantly and it's another feather in the thespian's cap.
A laudable aspect of 'Unnai Pol Oruvan' lies in its motivation to unite the so-called secular country which is split apart in terms of language and border.
"Do we care if there is a blast in Mumbai as its far off and a Hindi speaking city? Actually, we should," says Kamal in an irked tone standing on top of the tallest building and justifying his stand in eradicating terrorism.
It's not another commercial movie where the hero jumps across lanes but here the protagonist is filled with angst over the society's blithe and shoots questions which might have crossed our minds often but rebuffed thinking that those are impractical.
The unnamed, could be named as the 'common man' (Kamal Haasan) plans a series of explosions in the city to make the police department abide his wish. With high tech gadgets including encrypted sim cards, data card broadband kit and a portable television, he surmounts a building under construction and calls the Police Commisioner Raghavan Maraar (Mohan Lal).
Tension intensifies right from the start of the first call as he manifests he's dreadful by pointing out the C4s planted in a station and demands the release of four dreaded terrorists. Meanwhile, the live news also goes to a television reporter to cover it. Even the best hacker in town couldn't trace his location through calls and after it all ends, the 'common man' vents out his angst.
'If terrorism is instant, why not justice and, terrorism definitely cannot be linked with religion,' is his final take and his motif impressively strikes the commissioner himself.
Technically, the Red One camera handled by Manoj Soni is impressive and editing is adequate. Lead cast of the film Kamal Haasan and Mohan Lal shares equal screen space sending a literal message to the top stars of Kollywood! At ease is Kamal and the demeanor is a child's play. Mohan Lal as the honest cop is a valuable addition and a worthy opponent. Supporting cast of the movie plays their part well including Lakshmi, Anuja Iyer and Ganesh Venkatraman.
If there is a short coming, the film made to enlighten the 'common man' is abounding high class endeavor which make it enigmatic for the section.
'Unnai Pol Oruvan' slashes the beliefs in a good way, technically top notch and definitely should be patronized for its fine message.
Verdict: A Message Delivered With Finesse
