'Manjal Veyil' - Annoyingly Inane

Jun 12,2009
A movie made to entertain the audience will have few basic elements but Haasini Cinemas 'Manjal Veyil' has everything jumbled up thus leaving us annoyed with the insanity.

The lackluster treatment of the movie is just one of the many mishaps of director Vaseegaran. The film was in the shelves for a longtime which is evident in the outdated cinematography when movies are being made brilliantly colorful. It is not just the plot or music or characters but everything appears too clichéd comfortably floating us in a feeling of déjà vu right from the start till the end.

The story is as old as the stone ages about a special bond between the couple. The inseparable friends Vijay (Prasanna) and Gayathri (Sandhya) are the centre of attraction making everyone wrongly assume them to be ardent lovers. In comes Gayathri's sister's bridegroom (RK) during the wedding time and changes his mind to marry her. He does all evil tricks to make his dream come true and finally manages to make their parents agree for the marriage. But, Gayathri flees the scene with her friend Vijay in search of her lost lover. The sincere friend tries all possible means to unite her with the guy and does the task sacrificing something precious, his life.

What can the actors do when abandoned in a stupid, repeatedly tested script? But, the versatile artist Prasanna really makes the most of it with his usual helpless puppy face. It really proves us that an actor in the right hands could do wonders but if in wrong hands no one could save him! Sandhya has done nothing much except portraying the same old neighborhood girl with a screeching voice and she's definitely far off from emoting efficiently.

For the first time, the mock worthy villain RK of 'Ellam Avan Seyal' fame is the real scene stealer (in a sarcastic way). Whatever he tries simply evokes cat calls and jeering from the audience as it is too funny to believe his demeanor as an actual antagonist character. Especially, the way he challenges the hero with wrongly pronounced English words. In the role of lover boy, Bala is not bad in his dialogue delivery. MS Bhaskar's comical attempt evokes laughter just to an extent. Supporting cast is in fact far better than the actual lead cast in terms of performance.

Bharathwaj has composed the musical score for namesake rendering songs, that doesn't appeal even a tad amount and the same goes for background music too. Udayasangar (editing) and Kaviarasu (cinematography) don't deserve special mentioning as they have done nothing to write home about.

Director Vaseegaran had chosen the run-of-the-mill and outdated script which is so irrelevant in modern time. Atleast, if he could have tried to make it an interesting watch we could have forgiven him for the decision. However, even after keenly probing into movie there is neither a saving grace nor a highlight to talk about except the sign bell to leave the cinema hall. RK in the character of the silly villain could be one for he is irksome and somehow you can enjoy satirizing the character.

'Manjal Veyil' is undoubtfully a bad movie with frivolous script, boring screenplay and simply avoidable at all costs.

Verdict: Buy a ticket at your own risk
