Kulir - Numbingly Cold

Jun 06,2009

'Kulir', the story of an arrogant young boy and his sinful acts out of frustration in a convent school is excessively unrealistic leaving us numb and regret for entering the cinema halls.

The young debutant lead cast Sanjeev and Riya Poongodi has tried their level best to do justice for the roles. But, alas! Everything first time director Anita Udeep tried went either overboard or resembles the west making us unable to associate with the happenings. Our Protagonist Surya (Sanjeev) is an adamant champ ready for duels similar to his gangster father Aditya. His divorced mom in frenzy to guide him the right way sends him to the Oooty Lakeview school (a school that bears the name only in the title). When he enters the principal's office, Surya gets lectured on the guidelines of the campus and why it is the best school in southeast Asia!

The place is gangsta style with rappers, dominating pupil leaders, a fight ground called the ring, most insane ragging ever heard of (dig a 10x6 pit!) and most importantly no classes but still the characters call it a school! Anyway, so our Surya stays out of trouble to be a good boy gets into the company of the principal's daughter (Thanya) and earns the enmity of the three seniors by becoming the ASPL with the help of his childhood buddy Babloo. So this is how clichéd the story goes that ends in vengeance and redemption in a different form.

Instead of a sore thumb, the movie has a whole hand that is sore. Firstly, the environment that is designed something like the Hogwarts School in Harry Potter series is something which we might have never heard of. The milieu is too dreamy to be believed as real. Secondly, the characters behave too matured and arrogant to be school kids. Now, let's stop counting as it will go a long way but apart from these Riya Poongodi simply irritates with punch dialogues. She could be awarded the silliest heroine and for tormenting the spectators.

Sanjeev is good in acting at certain areas but emoting is a long way to be achieved. Babloo (Karthik) is charming and fits the role. The three senior guys had somewhat come out with an average performance with a psychotic touch. Supporting cast comprising of seasonal actors is neat. The relieving factor of the film is the musical score by Bobo Sashi and excellent cinematography by L.K. Vijay. Sashi's background score with Yogi B crooning the theme along with two of the numbers add pep to the colorfully captivated shots.

Director of photography L.K. Vijay flamboyantly captured the lush greens, looming silhouettes and soothing snow in the grounds. Anita Udeep has lost track in the deep woods in her first attempt with a lackluster script and irksomely slow screenplay that is a pain to sit through. The saving grace of the movie is it's crisp run time, a mere 2 hours.

'Kulir' can boast for its perfect visuals but the peeving narration has made it to miserably bite the

Verdict: You can comfortably skip this one
