Eesa - Crude Brutality
Aug 08,2009
'Eesa' is raw, crude and brutal which is definitely not for the faint of hearts that might make them go berserk.
With a thirst to taste success, actor Vignesh is trying every possible ways in Tamil cinema to leave his mark and this time with debutant director Bala Ganesh, they have churned out a movie which was supposed to be emotionally moving but the abounding gore overshadows the melancholy. Everything right from the location, objects and scenes are so realistic which is strikingly impressive at times.
The story is about a daily labor Sudalesan alias Eesa (Vignesh) and his animalstic vendetta against the village big shot Annachi (Rajendran) and his henchmen. All the while the protagonist hunts down the bad doers in the most brutal fashion armed with a cudgel and brings them back home to his wife. She in turn lauds him for his efforts and abets him to keep carrying his task.
Just before the end of first half things unfold surprisingly to reveal the bloody murderer Eesa is actually avenging the death of his wife and has been in a state of hallucination unable to recognize that she is dead already. The flashback reveals the chance encounter when Selvi (Lakshana), his wife comes across the horrenduous murder committed by Annachi. She tries to escape but in vain as their henchmen kills the girl and Eesa's close buddy played by Singam Puli. Selvi dies in the hands of her husband and begins the story of blood curling vendetta.
In the story part, there isn't much to expect as it isn't innovative or fresh but a plot as old as the hills. We know clearly that Vignesh is eager to become a mass hero and a versatile performance in his acting career. But, that doesn't mean he has to overreact to every single emotion in the movie. The characterization similar to that of Bala's protagonists is not polished to perfection.
Debutant Lakshana looks captivating in the role of a jubilant worker and she emotes whenever an opportunity arises. The best supporting cast is lent by the villain Rajendran who is not loud like the usual and his henchmen bolsters his villanous nature.
Musical score by Haran is nothing to write home about. Not even a single song or a background score stays in our mind when coming out of the cinema halls. MS Bhaskar, 'Lollu' Manohar and Macha Kaalai tried their best to evoke laughter but in vain.
Director Bala Ganesh has the potential to make a good film and his script cannot be blamed. But, his gory treatment and forgettable scenes brings down the tempo of 'Eesa'. The entire second half is shot in the same water beds and the camera moves along the waters like that of the movie 'Anaconda' that is irking. For Vignesh, it's better luck next time and the makers should have realized such gore would rebuff the family audience for sure.
'Eesa' has a neat storyline but the inane caricature of the protagonist and abounding gore makes it bite the dust.
Verdict: Try it if you have a strong liking for murder and blood
