Yogi - Sentimental Gangster

Nov 27,2009
So, atlast we have an Ameer movie 'Yogi' directed by Subramaniya Siva but had it lived up to the hype? Sadly, no it falls flat without provoking any sort of interest.

Maybe, we expected too much out of the 'Paruthi Veeran' maker or maybe forgot the fact that it is not made in his direction but by someone else. However, being Ameer's debut movie as an actor and set in the so-called realistic slum with some violence throw in, the expectation was something different.

The movie starts according to the premonition about a low lying slum area where men have no emotion, conscience or respect for other humans. They hunt for food and murder is an everyday occurrence just like, 'hey dude, it's morning already. Let's have a cuppa tea and kill someone on the way.' So, it goes with the story of Yogi (Ameer) and his four men gang with their anti-social crime activities to earn a living. It's just for the daily quota of food and booze that make them kill people. Sound weird but it's the way of life in the survival!

All these things just from the first 15 minutes of the movie and things start to crumble when Yogi gets hold a baby in an accidental incident. Clutching hard to his new found hope, the wannabe gangster starts nurturing the kid in his own style and gets closely attached to it. Yogi decides to keep the baby for himself while the other goons want it to demand a ransom from the rich parents.

That's when the audience start wriggling in their seat unable to guess whether it is a gangsta flick or the story of a doting father. In his debut, Ameer had worked hard to look macho and his muscles do bulge at times showing that he had hit the gym. As the Telugu speaking girl stuck in Chennai, Madhumitha in the role of Sulo alias Sulochana looks quintessential. Being a native of Andhra, her language flow is casual and she does whatever could be done in the short time offered.

Director Subramaniya Siva had done his best to bring the life of slums, their living milieu to celluloid. It's so dirty on camera and sometimes you might feel like dusting yourself off! Musical score by Yuvan Shankar Raja was top notch in the trailer, but he did a single melancholic humming that travels all along the narration. Cinematography and editing is done worthy but the tugging script pulls all the hard work along with it.

There is no action except for one or two scenes but the entire plot is based on the baby. Instead of men, the women and children might love the cute baby named Jasi. The kid is so energetic and had really undergone much stress to do the most bizarre scenes including one with a snake and ants! Ewww! Some of the scenes where Jasi emotes are cute and relaxes us a bit. Ganja Karuppu tickles the funny bone once gain.

Director Subramaniya Siva's script is so weak and the justification about the soft corner in a murderer's heart didn't come across well. And, for Ameer we shall wait for him to come out with his 'Kannapiran'.

'Yogi' lacks the action and the sentiment so doesn't fall into any category except making us exasperate in the tedious run time.

Verdict: Boring baby's day out in the slums
