Vedigundu Murugesan - Hilarious Sarcasm
Jul 18,2009
'Vedigundu Murugesan' has the much needed comical touch only in the title and tries to makes us laugh till the end with little success.
Director Moorthy with a clear cut vision to through abundant sarcasm over the society with jocular moments has ventured to make the film but his execution is plain irking at times which might go well only along the front benchers! If comedy is the forte the maker should have envisaged a better script and given more space for the cast to perform rather cramming them up into the thin plot which is completely frivolous.
'Vedigundu' Murugesan the guy with a prefix since his childhood is the local, loud-mouthed man of the area with rugged looks. Despite his crude language and loathsome behaviour, he is a man of golden heart. He gives shelter to the mentally challenged school friend Ponni and knowing this deed of his the local judge (Nirmala Periyasamy) forgives his petty crimes. Apart from involving in occasional misdeeds, Murugesan with his naive character impresses the local constable Nachiya (Jyothirmayi) and the couple develops their romance in the police station itself!
If everything is going smooth and well, we might not have a plot right! So, we have a small time goondas group with two brothers involved in recurring money from the borrowers with atrocious threats. The younger brother rapes Ponni and when Murugesan retaliates he accidentally dies. The revenge saga of the elder brother against Murugesan and the finale forms the rest.
Right from the start everything is clich'd in the film starting with a rugged man with generous heart, completely mismatched lady constable heroines who's as dumb as a girl could get and the predictable plot. As if this is not enough, Vadivelu in the role of 'Alert' Arumugham in an ever clich'd role of conning innocent people in the supposed to-be comical ways ends up irritating us like never before. But, as we are quite used to his presence we have to smile here and there just for the sake of it. The parallel comedy track never amalgamates with the movie. If directors stop this practice it would be a welcome relief for the audience who are confused with which comedy track comes from which film!
Pasupathi has the looks to go with the character but such a talented actor has been wasted to the core. Jyothirmayi's screen presence is felt but she can't help much in the silly demeanor. All others try to tickle our funny bone which succeeds sometimes but largely annoys often. Musical score by Dheena has familiar flicked tunes from old movies. Cinematography by Bala Barani and editing is ok. Director Moorthy has tried to cater for the B and C centres in a comical style which hasn't achieved the target.
'Vedigundu Murugesan' is jocular and sarcastic at times but irksome in entirety.
Verdict: For the B and C centre audience
