'Pasanga' Witty But Monotonous

May 01,2009
The foremost advice for people who are going to enter the cinema hall is, leave your impressions and expectations that were created by Sasikumar's 'Subramaniapuram'. The actor-director has only produced 'Pasanga' directed by debutant Pandiraj on his company productions banner. While filmmakers delve into the emotions of the adult, seldom prominence is rendered to the children's world that has been taken up as the crux for the movie.

The story revolves around two boys Jeeva and Anbarasu and their gang rivalry that is provoked due to Jeeva's jealousy. Jeeva is the class bully who constantly rags the newcomers and rules the area with his macho domination. His father being the school correspondent and a teacher bolsters his arrogant activities with no one to question him. But, when a newcomer Anbarasu stands up against him everything goes amiss. Anabaru is an exceptionally talented boy brave and daringly goes against Jeeva's rules. He becomes the school topper and wins everyone's heart by his kind approach. Without any grudge towards Jeeva, he extends a friendly hand but the former rebuffs him and continues his vendetta. On the other hand, both their families who are opposite neighbors get into a tussle. Meanwhile, Jeeva's sister Sobhikannu and Anbu?s half father Meenakshi Sundaram falls in love. What might have turned out a big tragic fight ends smoothly after which the arch rival boys realize their value of friendship.

The debutant cast of the teen boys including Jeeva, Anbu, Manomani, Kuttymani, Mangalan, Pakkada and girls in the lead has given a wonderful performance. But, it is the screenplay and story that really lags leaving the viewers irked at times. One cannot surely determine what kind of message or a movie the director intended to bring about. Pandiraj has envisaged the shots in desperado style whenever the two arch rivals, teen boys in this case meet to settle scores. James Vasanth, the composer of the soulful romantic song 'Kangal Irandal' imported some of the jazz and rock music to fill up the scene. But, instead of making the crowd go awe, they start jeering unable to associate themselves with the scene.

Amidst all this, the witty dialogues and realistic mockery of the boys brings the roof down with laughter. Subtle instances to present day politics in the dialogues and famous quotes from movies like 'Run' does evoke a hearty laugh. The tiny kid boy in Anbu?s family grabs attention with his gibberish talks and witty body language. Pandiraj had made a good selection of the right kids but have left them deserted in a wrong script that doesn't entertain but rather creates boredom.

Musical score by James Vasanthan has few average tunes but not even a single number is equal to what he did in 'Subramaniapuram'. His serious background score for the amateurish children's tussle is funny and silly at many instances. Cinematography is one of the highlights of movie that has captured the school and its atmosphere aptly. In the climax, while the characters applaud to rise up Anbu from coma everyone in the movie hall clap together. If you think it's due to enthusiasm, you are wrong cause it's just out of sheer boredom and a gesture to endure it.

For every cinema lover, a movie that is based on kids will instantly spark Mani Ratnam's 'Anjali'. The movie had everything embedded in it. But, 'Pasanga' falls flat filled with boring, monotonous scenes with a not so riveting script except for the witty remarks made here and there.

Ahh...

Cinematography, few good scenes

Eww...

Screenplay, music and monotonous scenes

Verdict: Is not entertaining for the adults and even the kids
