Meiporul -Innovative Soap

May 02,2009
'Meiporul Kanbathu Arithu' is the core theme of 'Meiporul' an innovative approach in Tamil cinema made by a team of NRI Tamils. Son of famous producer Janakiram who produced the critically acclaimed 'Mohamull', Natty has directed the movie. The debutant director has pitted his trust on people who could give life to the character rather than famed actors. A laudable move indeed! While watching the movie for the first few minutes, one cannot deny the fact that all new faces creates bit awry and makes one unable to associate with the actors. But, it dissolves later on when the story sets in.

Sam (Krish Bala) and Devi (Anusha) are married couples who reside in the U.S. Sam is a doctor by profession while Devi works as a reporter in a U.S. based Tamil magazine. Everything goes smooth for the couple who are waiting for a baby to rejuvenate their mundane lives. When Devi comes across a child kidnapper she acts with wit and puts the person behind the bars. Her instant fame envies her counterparts in the office that creates an enemity. It is then things began to happen wacky for both Sam and Devi.

Raja (Natty) meets Sam in a bar and slowly he reveals his ESP power to him perplexing his earlier notions about god and miracles. Slowly, when events unfold starting from a beer bottle to a Governor daughter's kidnap, Sam has no way to go except to believe the mystery man. His close friend Vishva (Narayanan) willingly volunteers to clear the doubt and prove his misconceptions wrong. Raja convinces Sam that he is going to die in the hands of his very own wife on a particular date. The nail biting end reveals all the hidden truth and how Sam evades his so-called fate predicted by Raja.

Almost all the actors face the camera for the first time in their life which is evident on-screen. Krish Bala, Anusha and Narayanan have come out with a fine acting, pretty neat for amateurs. But, their inexperience in acting out shows often that creates a soap opera feel throughout the movie. Their dull zombie like expressions adds fuel to the fire making it even bothersome. Directors Natty Kumar and Krish Bala have managed to write an innovative script filled with twists and turns. But, it is the portrayal that is so amateurish leaving no impression in our mind when the movie ends.

Cinematography is good in the outdoor locations that feature spellbinding locations of the USA. Editing is neat that cuts the scenes with a mysterious touch for the truth to be unraveled in style during the climax. Musical score has managed to cross the below average level and has reached a safe zone.

For a first time effort, 'Meiporul' is surely a plausible outing set in the thriller genre but when we see it as an entertaining movie, we feel it more as a soap rather than a full length feature film.

Ahh...

Innovative script, screenplay

Eww...

Soap style scenes, unfamiliar cast

Verdict: Not bad for an amateur venture
