'Masilamani' - Amply Entertaining
Jun 13,2009
Director RNR Manohar with a penchant to simply entertain the audience with funny moments and a simple script has churned out the neat entertainer Masilamani.
Casting the known lead pair Nakul and Sunaina bolstered by Sun Pictures aggressive promotion, the movie is a youthful romantic story about a chance impersonation and the frivolous incidents that carry it forward to the predictable climax. RNR Manohar has tried his best not to impose too many unbelievable heroic stunts by justifying things with sensibility and we should say he has almost succeeded in his attempt.
Masi (Nakul) from the lower middle class area is the saviour of localites and ready to bash baddies for good. A chance encounter brings him across the beautiful classical dancer Divya (Sunaina) and he falls head over heels in love with her. But, as fate would have it whenever he fights for good the girl comes across concluding him to be a heartless gangster. To woo his ladylove, Masi impersonates himself into another decent guy named Mani and becomes a favorite of her family. When things go smooth Bhoopathy the local inspector in an attempt to marry Divya tries hard to prove Masi's real identity. With twists and surprises, the duo's tussle continues to reach a happy ending.
Nakul has improvised his acting and dancing skills a lot since Kadhalil Vizhundhen. He has landed in a perfect script that is jubilant lending way to emote his youthfulness. He's good at humor yet should keep his heroism a bit under control for his career to flourish. Sunaina is simple, sweet and charming. The couple share a good on-screen chemistry and we can bet we will be seeing more of the combination in future. Sandhanam and his buddy on one side while MS Bhaskar and Karunaas on the other side has shouldered the responsibility of making the audience laugh leading to worthy jocular moments at times. Other cast including her father Delhi Ganesh and family members is at ease.
Music director D. Imman has done a laudable job after a long time with hummable melodies and foot tapping numbers. Cinematography and editing is good.
The script is not profound with clichéd scenes of impersonation that we have often seen earlier. But, director Manohar's strength lies in adding comical touch often even at the most serious incidents which eradicates boredom whenever it peeks a bit out. References to superstars and megastars are nowadays becoming an inevitable part of movies for making it saleable which should be stopped as early as possible. There are trivial flaws and a few commercial elements to please the lower centers. The good part of the movie is it doesn't fall into the regular category of formula flicks but a time pass movie excluding abounding heroism and punch dialogues.
Masilamani is commercial and comical with tad touch of sensibility that would provide a neat time pass if you are ready to brush aside your reminiscence of erstwhile movie
Verdict: A good watch
